I was just thinking that it would be cool to use peerguardian lists or something similar to block malicious ip addresses. it would not be that hard. a simple php script that parses a txt list of the format xxxxxx:0.0.0.0-0.0.0.0 and adds entries to the torrent_bans table. i was going to make a c program that does just that, and adds it to a .sql file (which i would then upload to the sql server), but i noticed that the ip addresses (in the database) were stored it a different format than a traditional ip address, so I ran into a wall there. i would assume that php would be more simple to write and to implement, so I am wondering if anyone out there can write a script for me.

thanks

the list i was referring to is located here http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/splist.zip

i believe the azureus safepeer plugin also uses this list.

I did research for a week on this..looking at swarms and IPs that are not even in safepeers, but they are slowing the swarm down very nicly to a damn crawl and you'll have to seed for days Very Happy , instead of few hours!

There is something like this http://www.dessent.net/linblock/ for iptables and etc and I can easily make a script for ipfilter also.

bittorrent protocol is a complete mess..you got spammers/hackers and malicious people on top of mpaa and etc..all into the mix..

and then you got stories like this http://opentracker.blog.h3q.com/?p=29
that peerguardian just lists ranges of ip blocks sometimes without any legit reason.

I got a user in Oman that his whole ISP block is in peerguardian, but he a legit user and he seeds and etc..

anyways..let me know what u guys come up with ..for the tracker...we'll have to experiement with it ..,

one thing is for sure..it'll protect trackers against bad evil people..and it'll speed up the swarms ..but it also might block legit IPs ..then we'll have to work thru that.

Heh i know what you mean. The bittorrent protocol is a mess right now. I know what you are saying about blocklists blocking legit ip blocks, but unfortunately ip addresses sometimes change. I wonder what demonoid (rest in peace) was doing to keep their site clear of all that crap that is out there. Well at any rate I hope someone comes up with something that works, because I am not having much luck myself.
